Bad Acne - What To Do

By

I have struggled with really bad acne on and off for over twelve years. It was never pleasant. Some remedies worked and some did not, but the majority of those years being my teenage years, and not having medical insurance, I do wish I had done things differently. I also wish the internet had been as easy to navigate as it is now, so my parents or I could have researched more information on our own. I have currently found a regimen that works for me, but everyone’s body responds to acne remedies differently, and in the case of bad acne it is certainly important to consider your individual needs.

Research

The best place to start researching how to clear acne is here on the internet. You need to familiarize yourself with active ingredients and different names of products. Did you know that the active ingredient in ProActiv solution, Benzoyl Peroxide, is also the active ingredient in several other more affordable products you can find in your local drugstore or grocery store, such as Clearasil? If you have reacted poorly to Clearasil, you may not want your next product to be Proactiv. Every product in the store has a list of active and inactive ingredients on the back, and they can also be found in product descriptions online. Be wary of products that do not disclose their ingredients.

I, personally, did find Proactiv lessened my breakouts, but caused my skin to be very red and oily, so I sought another product with Benzoyl Peroxide, gave it time, and was very pleased with the results. The treatment was the Acne.org Regimen that was formulated by Daniel Kern, someone who suffered with acne for a long time and spent years researching a treatment that would be effective, yet affordable.

Seek information from multiple sources and understand that if a person reacts negatively to an acne treatment that does not necessarily mean you will. Similarly, you could be one of the few to have an adverse reaction to a product yourself, even though you hadn’t read about anyone having a negative reaction before.

Oily Skin

If you are experiencing bad acne it is important that you be wary of ingredients that are overly drying. You may feel that your skin is oily but that does not mean you should dehydrate your skin. You may soon find yourself red and itchy if you do so. And new acne medications are going to have some form of mild irritating effect on your skin, even natural remedies for acne. If your treatment does not include a light moisturizer, make sure to purchase one additionally.

Make a Plan to Stay Healthy

Give your treatment time to work, generally 6-8 weeks, but excessive peeling and itching are not good signs and you need to discontinue use if this is occurring. Stick to a healthy diet to avoid having an adverse reaction to a food and mistaking that for a reaction to your treatment. Sticking to a moderate exercise plan is also recommended.

Think of your treatment like a school science project. Remember vocabulary like control and independent and dependent variables? You don’t have to remember which is which, but remember that with an experiment you only want to be testing one set of things at a time. If you are testing your new acne remedy, avoid other changes like new soaps, shampoos or other hair products. What’s in your hair will get on your face when you roll over in bed. You may also want to suggest your significant other not make any changes in those products as well.

Pay Attention to Your Body

As I said before, be wary of adverse reactions to any acne remedies. A little rash can grow very fast and is a lot harder to get rid of than it is to acquire.  Also, although theories about a blanket rule against individual foods such as chocolate and peanut butter have been disproven, it is possible that you may discover a mild food allergy or sensitivity that is causing a skin reaction. Finally, if you have really bad acne it may be time to locate a dermatologist.

See a Doctor About Severe Acne

There are many home remedies for acne vulgaris, and many tips for how to get rid of pimples to be found on the internet. These are often meant only for moderate acne or spot treatments for the occasional breakout. Research will show you that acne is a complicated infection that had different roots for each individual. There are also conditions, such as those of the endocrine system, which may include acne as a symptom. If you have tried different regimens to no avail, it may be time to see a dermatologist.

There are a variety of topical prescription formulations of different medications that your doctor may recommend you try, as well as oral medications that could complement them for faster results. Having suffered from acne for so many years, I have spent a lot of money on different products. Different things have worked for me. Some are available over the counter and some are not. After getting the acne to a moderate level, I found that over the counter products could work for years. However, your mileage may vary. All you can do is try things out, and that is what your doctor would do as well, but you will also have prescription medications to work with when you go that route. Severe irritation and constant itching are signs of such bad acne that calls for a doctor’s opinion.

Stay Confident

Altogether, do not let your acne bring you down. You need to love yourself on the inside because no acne remedy has immediate effects. You will find what works for you, but you need to be patient and you need to take care of yourself. It is difficult to watch everything you put near your face and painstakingly make sure it is clean and hydrated while you watch your friends fall asleep with their makeup on and just rinse their face off in the morning. But acne vulgaris is a skin condition that requires a treatment, and it is not too difficult to make it a part of our daily lives once we find the products that work for us.
